Art & Design


Welcome to the wonderfully creative subject of Art and Design!

Art and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

Below, you can see how we organise and plan for Art & Design at GPS, and we also provide some examples of ‘Art in Action’, featuring projects and pupil work from across the school.

Intent, Implementation, Impact 


At Grangetown, we value Art and Design as an important part of the broad and balanced curriculum that we offer to our children. Art and Design provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and to express their creative thoughts and ideas. Our aims within Art are to enable children to become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques, to evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design, to know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and to understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.


Recently, we carried out a review of our curriculum in order to ensure that the skills taught are progressive and carefully sequenced throughout school. In doing this we looked at the knowledge that we wanted the children to have and the skills which we would teach in order to achieve this. We also developed a list of artists for study in each year group in order to ensure that these were relevant to the skills and techniques studied in that year group. This also ensures that artists are not repeated throughout school. Class teachers have the autonomy to decide when art is taught,  whether this be weekly or blocked into half terms. This can often change depending upon the nature of the topic. All children in KS1 and KS2 will cover drawing, painting, printing and sculpting throughout the year but the skills taught within these areas will be different. Each teacher takes the objectives from our curriculum and teaches these through exciting and engaging activities which allow the children to be expressive and creative. All children in KS2 use a sketch book to record and evaluate their drawings.


Through having fun and engaging art lessons, our children show a positive attitude towards their learning in this subject and talk with excitement about the pieces which they have created. The supportive and safe environment which we have created in our school allows the children to approach art lessons with confidence and the knowledge that they are able to achieve the end goal. As a school we measure the impact of Art through the children’s ability to demonstrate the skills they have been taught, by talking to the children about their art lessons, via short quizzes, and through observation of lessons and monitoring of sketch books by the Art coordinator. The information gathered enables teachers to respond to misconceptions and plan next steps. We have a system in place whereby ongoing assessment is recorded by class teachers.
