 Summer 1

Winter Gardens - Rainforest explorers

The children had the best day becoming rainforest explorers at the Winter Gardens! This trip rounded off our Rainforest topic beautifully and allowed the children to truly explore the different animals and plants located in the Rainforest and what the conditions would be like living in this environment. As a bonus, we made the most of the sunny weather and had fun playing in the park!

PE - Tennis with the LTA

Year 4 were lucky enough to be offered free coaching through the LTA (Lawn tennis association) who's vision is 'Tennis opened up' and their mission to transform communities through tennis.

The children began by throwing the ball into the air and catching it without it touching the ground. We then moved onto forehand and backhand techniques and had a go at trying some challenging trick shots before moving onto some partner work. The children thoroughly enjoyed the session and realised the importance of 'not giving up' when they find something challenging!

Art - Sculpture

In Art we discussed and analysed Linda Lopez and her artwork using clay. We looked at different shapes created by Linda Lopez and used small amounts of clay to create similar shapes and begin to join small layers of clay together. We evaluated the different ways Linda Lopez makes designs and chose the most easy and effective way to mould our design.

 Spring 2

Science - Electricity

In science we have been learning all about electricity. We have learned and discussed how to work safely with electricity and discussed potential hazards in our homes. We identified and named parts of a circuit before creating our own simple circuit. We then added a switch to turn a light on and off. We predicted and tested out whether a bulb would work in a variety of different circuits too!

Athletics/Handball festival

Year 4 enjoyed a fun filled morning at the Raich Carter centre for the Athletics/handball festival! The children took part in a range of activities including sprints, relays, throwing and jumping games and even had a go at a Swedish hand ball game!

✨🌍 Geography 🌍✨

In Geography this term we are learning all about South America! The children will learn about the differences between the Northern and Southern hemisphere and where South America is located on a world map. We will also look at the continents that sit within each hemisphere and identify differences in physical features, population and pollution. Finally, the children will be able to locate a number of South American countries and understand which countries border each other.

The children enjoyed creating their own posters/fact files on a chosen South American country!

✨📚 World Book Day 2024 📚✨

The children had a fabulous time designing their own tops based on their favourite books as well as taking part in fun activities including a school class swap where the children were able to read their favourite book to a child in Year 1!

🧬 🧪 Y4 Science buddies workshop 🧪🧬

Year 4 had a fabulous time becoming scientists in our Y4 Science buddies workshop! We completed a range of experiments involving vinegar and baking soda, creating some fizzing colours and blowing up balloons! We were also able to see some mini explosions which the children all thoroughly enjoyed.

Spring 1

✨🇬🇷 Groovy Greek Day 🇬🇷

To celebrate our topic on Ancient Greece, Y4 had a special Groovy Greek Day. The children were invited to come in to school dressed as Ancient Greeks and all outfits were fabulous! We started our day by researching the Greek alphabet and creating our own name plaques using letters and symbols. We then made beautiful green and gold olive wreath crowns to wear throughout the day. We also learnt about different Greek monuments, particularly the Greek Pantheon 🏛️ and in small groups, the children were set the task of designing and constructing a Greek monument, using only a limited amount of resources. The challenge set was that the model had to hold a weight once constructed! All children worked brilliantly together and we had many succesful models! Throughout the afternoon, we looked at Greek pottery 🏺 and designed and coloured our own vase. The children also enjoyed our Greek taster session trying out food that they would have had in Ancient Greek times. Overall, the children had a fantastic day!

⚓️🌊 Sunderland Maritime Heritage Museum visit 🌊⚓️

Year 4 had a brilliant time at Sunderland Maritime Museum this term which has linked to our recent workshops on 'Ships and Shipwrecks' and 'Life under and above the waves'.

Safer Internet Day

During our live safer internet assembly the children enjoyed learning about very important online safety skills and behaviours, including: thinking carefully about sharing, how to protect themselves online, showing respect to others and how to get help when it's needed!

Seascapes Workshop

🌊 Under and above the Waves 🌊

Y4 were lucky enough to have a visit from Seascapes this term for a special workshop on life 'Under and above the Waves'.  As part of the workshop we looked at exciting habitats including the sandy seashore, kelp forest and the rocky reef and researched what animals and plants can be found there! 🐟🐠🐡

ART 🎨

This term in our Art lessons we are experimenting with painting and printing inspired by Robert Delauney. The children will be experimenting with colours to create their own colour palettes and learn how to use the layering technique to print patterns and shapes.

PE

This term in PE we are doing Gymnastics! The children will improve the accuracy and consistency of linking shapes, balances and travelling. They will be encouraged to be creative and experiment with changes in dynamics when working in pairs and groups.

Autumn 2

Science - 🧊 Ice cup experiment 🧊

The children have thoroughly enjoyed our science lessons this term! This week we carried out the 'Ice cup experiment'. The experiment taught the children about the process of evaporation and condensation using just a glass, some hot water and a couple of ice cubes. The children saw the warm water evaporate slowly and the water vapour rising to the top of the glass. The ice then cooled the water vapour and it condensed, turning back into a liquid and dripping down into the glass again. This experiment will contribute to our future lessons this term which will be focused on 'The Water Cycle'.

November - Swimming 🏊‍♀️

The children have now started Swimming at Southmoor! We will be Swimming once a week from now up until Christmas!

❄️ Arctic Day ❄️

This term the Year 4 children have all taken part in Arctic Day! The children had a fantastic time creating their own Kraken which links in with our English story 'Pugs of the Frozen North' as well as spending the afternoon with a brilliant guest who taught the children all about what life would be like living in the Arctic! The children had the chance to try on clothing which would protect them in the cold conditions as well as cooking and tasting some rationed food! The children learnt a lot about life in the Arctic which will contribute to our work in Science, DT and Geography this term.

Dodgeball Festival

Year 4 had a brilliant time taking part in a Dodgeball Festival at the Raich Carter centre. The children competed against multiple other schools, developing lots of new skills and techniques as well as understanding the importance of teamwork!

 Autumn 1

English - Freeze frames

The children had a fantastic time working in small groups to create freeze frames which retold the Mayan soothsayer's story of the Battle of Quirigua. This is the book we are currently focused on in English. The children enjoyed being able to act out the event using pictures which will help support the children when writing a letter to recount the battle.

Magical Maths

We have now completed our first Magical Maths problem solving and reasoning activity. Our first problem today looked at two fictional creatures called Zios and Zepts. The Zios have 3 legs and the Zepts have 7 legs. Explorer Nico, saw a crowd of Zios and Zepts. He managed to see that there was more than one of each kind of creature. Suddenly they all rolled over onto their backs and put their legs in the air. He counted 52 legs.

The children's challenge was to figure out how many Zios and how many Zepts were there? The children had a go at drawing the creatures and came up with a combination of different answers to the question. This activity was brilliant in helping the children with multiples of 3 and 7.

History

This half term we have been exploring the Mayan civilisation. We have been learning about when and where the remains of the civilisation were discovered, the buildings that were important to them and how their society was structured. The children enjoyed having a go at making their own 3D Mayan temple replica of Mexico’s Chichen Itza.

St Aidan’s Church Visit

The Year 4 children had a fantastic visit to St Aidan's Church where Father David taught us all about Baptism in the Christian Church, this linked in with our recent RE lessons on the topic of baptism. The children learnt about the importance of the Holy water and its purpose in the ceremony. The children also had the opportunity to hold the christening shell and candle as well as witnessing a christening take place… of a minion toy that is.

Science

Year 4 have loved our topic on States of Matter so far this term in Science! We have been looking at solids, liquids and gases and how different materials can change state. We investigated to find their different properties. We then experimented with Non-Newtonian liquids (slime). We had lots of fun observing what happened when we squashed, bounced and stretched to see how the slime acted.

We also experimented with cream and made observations on what happens when we shake it! The children enjoyed shaking jars of cream and discovering that we can make butter!

Autumn 1

The Year 4 children have been learning all about the Mayan civilisation this term. We have covered this topic in both English and History. The children will be reading the Rain Player book which will provide inspiration and ideas for their writing. In Science we will learning all about different states of matter. In RE we have been learning about baptism and the Holy Trinity, this will link up with our educational visit to St Aidan’s Church.
