Autumn 1

How to Catch a Star: Celebrate twenty years of the modern classic illustrated picture-book adventure for children!: Amazon.co.uk: Jeffers, Oliver, ...

Year 2JB have been retelling the story of 'How to Catch a Star' by Oliver Jeffers. We began by reading the story and creating a story map of the events of the story. We even made actions to go with our story map and learned them off by heart! After this, we began to write our story. The whole class worked extremely hard and produced some outstanding pieces of work! Miss Burn and Miss Duggan were extremely impressed!

Maths

Our topic in maths this half term has been 'Number and Place Value'.  The children have thoroughly enjoyed using base 10 to explore the place value of numbers up to 100. At the end of the topic, we recapped our learning of counting in 2s, 5s and 10s using cubes and even Lego! Who knew Lego could be used in maths? We have started to look at counting in 4s as well, something that is new to Year 2, and we have made an excellent start.

At the end of this half term, we have moved on to our new 'Addition and Subtraction' unit. We have wowed Miss Burn and Mrs Begum with our knowledge of number bonds to 10 and fact families and we have loved being able to use tens frames to support our knowledge.

We can't wait to see what we get up to in maths in Autumn 2!

Autumn 2

Science

In science, Year 2 had a visit from Andy’s Animal Adventures as part of our topic ‘Animals and Living T Things’. We explored animals and their offspring and we even got to see a tortoise and it’s child! There were lots of other animals too, such as chinchillas, a monkey, a parrot and a blue-tongued skink. We loved being able to stroke them! What an amazing experience!

 Spring 1

Wolfboy: Amazon.co.uk: Harkness, Andy, Harkness, Andy: 9781547604425: BooksSam's Sandwich : Pelham, David: Amazon.co.uk: Books

In Spring 1, we will be exploring 'Wolfboy' by Andy Harkness. The text will inspire us to write a 3-part narrative. The children will focus on perfecting the basic skills of capital letters and full stops, as well as finger spaces. They will also be looking at using 'and' and 'but' within sentences, as well as expanded noun phrases to describe characters and setting. Following the completion of this unit of work, we will also be writing a set of instructions to make a 'revenge sandwich' based on the book 'Sam's Sandwich' by David Pelham. The children will explore features of instructional texts, such as titles, subheadings, bullet points and imperative verbs. Using their learning, they will write their own set of instructions for a disgusting sandwich - yuck!

Maths

In maths this half term, Year 2 will be moving on to the topics of money. Building on from what they learned in Year 1, the children will be recapping their knowledge of the value of different coins and notes. In addition to this, they will learn to add money together, find change and find the difference between the two amounts of money. Following on from money, they will look at the topic of shape. They will begin by recapping their knowledge of 2D shapes and 3D shapes. The children will be able to identify the properties of 2D and 3D shapes and they will be able to recognise how many sides, vertices, edges and faces each shape has.

Spring 2

 English

In Spring 2, Year 2 will be focusing on the text 'The Sea Saw' by Tom Percival to help them write a retell of the story. They will further solidify their knowledge of sentence writing by applying capital letters and full stops consistently. They will also be looking at applying finger spaces within their sentences. In addition to this, they will use the co-ordinating conjunction 'and' to add more information to sentences and to join two sentences together. After they have finished their narrative topic, they will move on to writing a recount based on the life of Amelia Earhart. To help them, they will be exploring the 'Little People, Big Dreams - Amelia Earhart' book by Isabel Sanchez Vegara. In history, the children have been learning about Amelia Earhart, so they will be able to use their knowledge of her when writing.

Maths

During maths lessons in Spring 2, we will be recapping aspects of the our topic on place value, which we completed in Autumn 1. This will help to refresh our knowledge on this and ensure it is solid ready for Year 3! We will recap our work on number lines, flexible partitioning and comparing and ordering objects and numbers. After completing this recap, we will go back to the addition and subtraction topic which we started in Autumn 2. Building on what we've already done, we will look at addition and subtraction crossing 10. For example, 13 + 9 = 22 and 47 + 6 = 53.
