Summer 1
Science Buddies
As part of Science Week, the children took part in a Science Buddies workshop, where they got to be scientists for the hour and create their own bath bomb to take home! They chose what colour they wanted their bath bomb to be along with how they wanted it to smell, most of the children chose the bubblegum scent! They got to wear a white science coat and goggles to make sure they were real scientists and of course to keep them safe. They all had a wonderful time and couldn't wait to get home to use their bath bomb.

Make your own Bird Feeders
In English this half term we focused on writing instructions and wrote our own instructions all about how to plant a seed. To start off our instruction writing journey we looked at an example of a set of instructions on how to make a bird feeder. We looked at the features of instructions and their purpose before using them to make our own bird feeders using bagels, lard and seeds.

Spring 2
Liz Million Workshops
To celebrate the grand opening of our new school library we had a special visitor, writer and illustrator 'Liz Million' come into school to deliver workshops with the children. Y1 took part in two sessions with Liz. The first session they read one of her stories with her whilst Liz drew pictures to match. The second session she delivered a workshop on how to draw a penguin which the children thoroughly enjoyed!

Visit to Asda and Fruit Kebabs
In March we had a trip to Asda to buy ingredients to make our Fruit Kebabs which we had designed in DT. Before we went we made a whole class shopping list of all of the ingredients and materials we would need from the shop.
We walked up to Asda and when we got there got our baskets and used our shopping list to fill them up with all of the yummy fruit we needed! Once we had found everything that we needed we went to the checkouts, waited in the que and then paid for our shopping.
Once back at school our parents came in for our Spring Term Parent workshop and we worked with them to wash and chop our fruit and make our own fruit kebabs!

Spring 1
Hylton Castle
In February, Y1 visited Hylton Castle as part of our English story Rapunzel and to learn all about castles! We had a wonderful day exploring the 600 year old castle, trying on a knights armour and chain mail and we even got to hold a shield and sword just like a real life knight would of used hundreds of years ago!

Rapunzel by Beth Woollvin

This half term in English we learned all about Traditional Tales, our class story was Rapunzel however it wasn't the story we all know, this story came with a twist! The children learned all about the features of Traditional Tales and found out that there are many different versions of the same story out there just like the Rapunzel story we read. At the end of our topic the children wrote their first ever retell of a story from the beginning to end and they all did a fabulous job!
Autumn 2
Snowtubing

Andy's Animals
We had a fantastic visit from Andy and his animals to learn more about animal groups and animal diets which we have been learning all about in our science lessons this half term. We loved looking at all of the animals, especially the tortoise, we even got to feed him! We learned which animal group each animal came from and even which country they came from. Well done Year 1!

Whatever Next

Our first class story for Autumn 2 is 'Whatever Next' We will be using our book to retell the story, being able to write the beginning, middle and the end of the story. We will have lots of fun learning new skills, concepts and vocabulary, such as nouns and adjectives.
Autumn 1
Backhouse Park
We visited Backhouse Park to look for signs of Autumn!
Year 1 had a wonderful morning at Backhouse Park looking for signs of autumn. The children founds conkers, sticks and orange and brown leaves which we collected and brought back to school to make autumn crafts. The children also enjoyed some free time in the play park where we played on the swings and slides.

Dear Zoo

Our first class story in Year 1 is 'Dear Zoo' We learned the story using a story map we created and even had actions to go alongside. The children completed their first ever piece of writing, retelling the story of 'Dear Zoo'. Well Done Year 1!
